Today we join Canada Post in wishing the Province of British Columbia a happy 150th Anniversary. Actually, Vancouver Island had, of course, existed as a very British colony since 1849. The mainland, which was administered by the Hudson’s Bay Company, had meanwhile become overrun by American miners. This acted as a catalyst for the development of what would become British Columbia in several ways. First, there was an enormous influx of people and and dramatic increase in economic activity. Second, in order to safeguard its interests, the British government decided to upgrade the area to the status of a full colony, which occurred in 1858. The colony was merged with Vancouver Island prior to entering confederation in 1871.

The two thumbnails below show a panel of BC 150th anniversary stamps from both the obverse and the reverse sides. Click for larger views. We must say that the stamps are very well done, with the representative goldpan and nuggests on the obverse, and various historical photographs and artworks on the reverse.

    Hello!

Glad you’ve come back – was wondering what you went this summer! Hope all is well with you at work and at home. As for me, I ended up receiving a job offer at Yonsei Univ. College English Program in Seoul but decided to go forward with a position in Japan. There were a number of reasons for this, but I admit that I was really looking forward to teaching at Yonsei and living in Seoul. Looking forward to reading more of your posts!

    Happy BC Day!

    Hi Fred!

Great to hear from you! I’m glad to hear that you’ve got a position to go to in Japan, and I’m sure that you’ll find good things there. I’m entering a time of uncertainty myself, at the moment; such is the nature of short-term contracts.

In any case, great to hear from you! You may be the first “regular” to drop by since I started blogging here again. Look for more to come in August, and send me an email anytime you like!

    All the best,
    Nathan

Canada Post deliberately reversed the photo of Sir James Douglas on the back of the sheet as well as on the Official First Day Cover. This was done for design purposes. Unfortunately, it appears that Sir Douglas was unaware that his star of the Order of Bath was to be worn on the left side and not on the right side as seen on the sheet and cover.

The wearing of medals and honours is treated seriously by the Governor-General:

Canada Post was informed of this situation before the stamp was issued.
