Last Stolen Bill Reid Artefacts Recovered; First Nations Artefacts Stolen from Fort Langley
Image of recovered Bill Reid artwork from the CBC
I just discovered that I missed an important story last month: the last two Bill Reid artworks that were stolen from the Museum of Anthropology some months ago have been found. Notwithstanding the damage to one of the pieces (an argelite carving), it’s wonderful that all the pieces (including the Mexican jewelry pieces) have been found.
So far, no charges have been laid in the theft.
Meanwhile, some First Nations artefacts, including a drum, woven basket, and three masks, that were on display in the museum in Fort Langley have been stolen. It’s tragic that these kinds of thefts occur, and it begs the question as to whether the cultural heritage of this province is being properly stored and protected.
