Roy Henry Vickers in Vancouver

Trev Deeley Motorcycles: Host of Roy Henry Vickers in Vancouver, Dec. 12th-13th

Yesterday I and my son went to Trev Deeley Motorcycles on Boundary Road to see First Nations artist Roy Henry Vickers’ Vancouver holiday show, which is continuing until late afternoon today. It was my first time to see Vickers since I was a boy, when he gave me a personalized, signed art card, which I had custom framed a few years ago. I found him to be very warm, with a good sense of humour.

The show was advertised on the Vickers and Trev Deeley websites, the latter showing, like the sign in the parking lot, a Vickers eagle. The next picture shows the poster indicating the event…

…which is currently being held in the on-site conference room:

Vickers was also signing calendars, and was kind enough to sign mine with a personalized message:

My three-and-a-half-year-old son was the cause of an amusing little incident yesterday. Seeing Vickers autographing his own works, my son, I think, thought he was merely doodling on artworks, so he called out very loudly, “don’t draw!” When Vickers continued signing a calendar, my son reached forward and caused the artist to smudge his ink. (I immediately traded calendars with the person in question, who was ahead of me in the line.) A short time later while we were posing for a photograph, my son lunged forward and grabbed the signing pen, prompting Vickers to say, with a broad smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye, “don’t draw!” When he then signed a woodblock mount for my son, he said to me, “he’s the one with the fast hands.”

And thus my son now has a personalized, signed reproduction of a beautiful Northwest Coast artwork.
